To Ebook or Not To Ebook

I’ve had several people ask me if my ebooks will ever be put into print. They have expressed quite vocally that they prefer being able to hold the book, read it and set it down, pick it up at will, and take it with them. Trying to explain that you can do all the things with an e-book  just as you would a physical book, is akin to jumping into an empty swimming pool.

I do have to keep in mind that these same folks used to write on one of those whatchacallits…you know what I’m talking about…that thing with the ribbon and the carriage. A typewriter! That’s it!

I’m not dissuaded by the fact that they have that need. We all feel comfort in our own different ways, and after all, we’ve only been reading on stone, parchment or paper for centuries. I can only imagine what someone might have said when they decided to start using parchment instead of stone. “I like to hold my stone when I read it!”

I’m not making light of somebody else’s preferences. It is difficult to let go of old habits. After all, one of my all time favorite past times was perusing Barnes & Noble, or Borders for hours on end. So, I get it. I understand  how they feel.

We’re on the cutting edge of the industry right now though, and if we don’t take advantage of this wonderful technology, we’re missing out on a fantastic opportunity.

So, the answer to the question? I don’t know right now. Perhaps someday I will put them in print.

And who knows. Maybe decades from now, our children’s children will be asking the question, “Are you ever going to put these books in ebook format? I love my Kindle.”

Weigh in, and let me know what you think.

  1. EBooks are useful tools and convenient; however, try using one at the beach, or in a classroom – it sucks. I like my kindle, but I think we need to think in terms of coexistence if eBooks are to remain the frenzy. Beside’s as a writer, I have gone the conventional route simply because I want to write, not spend my time promoting my books – that’s what the publisher is for. That aside i will continue to embrace eBooks as a convenience – when I can, and hard books as I always have.

    • Thanks for the feedback Dane. Well said. My thoughts are that whether we publish traditionally or not, we as writers still have the obligation to ourselves to promote our own work. Whether it be book signings, lectures, author websites or blog posts, or what have you. I like having that control over my writing in how my books are promoted, but others don’t. It’s exciting to have your thumb directly on the pulse of your work.

  2. Great article Gina…
I have always been one to embrace technology and owned a Kindle early in their existence. I loved (and still love) my Kindle but I preferred to be “holding” a real book. That said, I have found the shear convenience of ebooks so overwhelming that I started relying more and more on my Kindle. Prior to ebook days, I was, literally, packing bags of books in the trunk of my car for trips. This isn’t so convenient for air travel. Anyway, I now love love love the convenience of carrying my KIndle and the massive variety of reading material in my purse! Dane makes valid points and I don’t think we are going to replace printed books. Lord knows videos didn’t replace the movie theatre. They will co-exist but I think the publishing world is seeing big changes. You either keep moving forward or get left in the dust! Love You!!! Carol

    • Thanks Carol! I do remember those days of hauling books around. If I didn’t have a book available, I felt like I would go through withdrawal. I’m comfortable with the co-existence of media. There are so many books piled around my house that I won’t let go of. It’s almost like having a relationship with a tangible object that gives you so much pleasure. Did that sound weird? I’m going to check out your blog. And I love you too!

  3. I get tired from looking at the screen… I personally prefer a real book in my hands… it has more soul in it, can’t explain how… but when you get to hold the same novel, in your hand and the other on the screen, you may understand.
But it could also be because that’s how i’m used to… if my kid’s first novels were ebooks, then he/she may grow into a different direction.
